Circumcision. It isn't something you thought you'd think twice about
was it. Why would you? Family tells you that you should. Every male in
you family is circumcised, and likely tell you that you should and
that it doesn't bother them, they are perfectly fine. Your doctor even
tells you all these possible benefits. He is just a baby, he wont
remember. It is after all just a little snip right?

Most people who mention all of the above, really are not fully
informed. I first want to talk about the function of the foreskin.
There are 19 functions, yea 19. It isn't just an extra piece of skin.
1. Erotic pleasure. Especially along the ridged band and Meissner's
Corpuscles. Removing this is the reason United States is the number 1
country using Viagra. The United States is the only country that
routinely circumcises their infants and the top country suffering from
erectile dysfunction. Also circumcising causes more pain during sex
for both male and female due to friction. Having the extra skin brings
more pleasure due to the gliding effect rather than rubbing effect.
Also cause circumcised to need lubricant. 2. is included in number 1.
Acts as a rolling bearing in intercourse and masturbation. This is the
very reason that Christians circumcise, to prevent masturbation and
somewhere along the lines the medical and religious mumbled jumbo was
included to justify it. It is Jewish and Muslim that do it for
religious purposes. 3. Prevents painful intercourse, which I stated in
#2. 4.Stimulates partners genitalia giving erotic pleasure, when must
I say more? 5. Supplies skin to cover shaft in erection and prevents
tightness. There have been many men complain of pain during erection
and this is caused by too much skin being removed. You can not tell in
most children till they are older if they had too much skin removed.
If your child complains about pain, discomfort, tightness then this
has happened to them. In more extreme cases they will actually tear
and draw blood due to this. Circumcision could actually set them up
for lifelong discomfort. 6. Stores pheromones and releases them on
arousal.7. Stores, releases and helps distribute natural lubricants.
("Smegma" which may contain a chemical that in fact kills HIV. And
pre ejaculatory fluid. 8. Makes the glans (head) a visual signal of of
sexual arousal. 9. Provides a seal against the vaginal wall to contain
semen
Ok, that was the sexual part of it now the protective.
10.prevents the glans becoming keratinised (caloused reducing
sensitivity) and keeps it soft and moist. The glans is not meant to be
an outside organ. This is not normal. This is why you shouldn't
receive advise from a circumcised man because he doesn't know what it
is like with a foreskin. He doesn't know how it feels to have all that
extr sensitivity or how it will feel to not need Viagra at 50. 11.
Protects the thin skinned glans against injury. Say your son had an
accident of some kind. Like he falls of a slide or porch onto sharp
rocks, his foreskin was cut or tore. You go to the doctor and he says
if he was circumcised the boy would need cosmetic surgery. He glued or
stitched him up so he could heal. This has actually happened. 12.
Protects the nerves in the glans, retaining their erotic function. 13.
In infancy prevents against contamination and UTIs. Yes this argument
is used in medical reasons to circumcise. At the time people made this
argument, intact babies were being forcibly retracted. This will cause
UTIs. You don't ever forcibly retract until the child has done it
themselves because the skin is fused to glans like a fingernail to
your finger. No contaminants can get in. In circumcision, the skin is
literally ripped away and clamped, smashing nerves very painfully,
then cutting it off. The foreskin has way way more nerves than the
clitoris so imagine that happening to you. 14. Provides lysosomes for
bacteriostatic action around the glans. 15. Pigmented it protects the
unpigmented glans from sunburn....odd one but true. 16. Vascular.Rich
in blood vessels that bring heat to the tissue. It has been noted that
intact babies don't pee as soon as they are exposed to the air like
circumcised babies. This is why, their glans is exposed to the cold
air. It is true, my son never did it and he is intact. 17. Provides
skin graft for reconstructive surgery. 18. The foreskin is important
embryologically, in the formation in the end of the penis and the
urethra. If there is no foreskin, the urethral opening is not at the
end of the penis where it should be, but somewhere on the underside.
19. Holds absorbent tissue in place after urethral surgery....ok
helpful, but not the best function

Well now you know the function let's talk about the benefits................
THERE ARE NO PROVEN BENEFITS
While there are some possible benefits, as listed on American
Association of Pediatrics, none ZERO are proven. Even if they were
proven, there are better options which we teach and give our daughters
instead of cutting them such as teaching them to wash themselves,
condoms, antibiotics. To look like dad, A. No son cares about the
circumcision status of his father and even if he did know it could be
explained to him that when daddy was a babysit was thought to be good
to do this but mommy and daddy learned it wasn't very good so they
chose to do better. The same goes for if an older brother is
circumcised. Do it because most boys are and don't want him to be
teased...Ahhhh wrong! Most baby boys are intact now days. While it may
still prevail in some areas it is estimated that only 30% of American
boys are circumcised in 2010-2011.

There is psychological damage, disruptance in breastfeeding, mom
feeling baby is detached from her, lower pain tolerance in
vaccinations are all signs. They show signs of post traumatic stress
disorder. Even when anesthesia is used it cannot block out the dorsal
nerve and they feel alot of pain. When they are "quiet" or "asleep"
they have gone into shock. This is all proven. Look it up yourself.
The stress hormone measured during the procedure shows the pain is
beyond what a adult can even handle. Please, don't base your decision
on my article, do your own research and decide , but I will never

And I’m guessing you probably would have completely left that part of his body alone, since you had bigger things to worry about like oh, you know, staying ALIVE?And how well would this "leave it alone" approach have worked for mankind in a world with no soap or antibiotics? Van Howe, MD, MS, FAAP, Department of Pediatrics, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Marquette, Michigan, in the latest edition of Medical Decision Making journal.“If neonatal circumcision was cost-free, pain-free, and had no immediate complications, it was still more costly than not circumcising,” says Van Howe. “Neonatal circumcision is not good health policy, and support for it as a medical procedure cannot be justified financially or medically.”Over the past century, some doctors have said circumcision benefits the boy later in life and is therefore justifiable as a prophylactic procedure. According to the findings of this study that isn’t true. Wellness decreases as a result and with that goes an increase in health-care related expenses.Circumcision costs everyone since both Medicaid and Medicare cover infant circumcision and its complications later in life. Medicaid pays for 28% of all infant circumcisions in the United States. Thirteen states do not cover circumcision in their Medicaid programs.The analysis is based on published data from multiple observational studies, comparing boys circumcised at birth and those not circumcised, using the Quality of Well-being Scale, a Markov analysis, the standard reference case, and a societal perspective. Neonatal circumcision increased incremental costs by $828.42 per patient and resulted in an incremental 15.30 well-years lost per 1000 males. The only ones to gain from this unnecessary and harmful surgery are the attending physicians and hospitals.ICGI has created a task force to discuss calling for a nationwide moratorium on the routine circumcision of baby boys based on this article's conclusion, and other bioethical concerns.No experiment or random control trial has ever proven any of the alleged benefits to routinely circumcising baby boys. 'via Blog this'When I was preparing for the birth of my first child, there was only one thing I knew I did not want - an episiotomy. I wanted to try to give birth without drugs but I was open to an epidural if needed. I wanted to try laboring in water. I wanted to try breastfeeding but wasn't sure if it would work for me. So when it came time to push and I heard my midwife say, "Let's try a couple more pushes and then we might have to CUT..." I gathered up every bit of strength I had and pushed my baby out even though I couldn't feel anything because I had an epidural. I knew I did NOT want her to cut me down there. It seems ironic now that shortly after birth, I handed my baby boy over to be circumcised.Before I get started, I want to emphasize that I am not writing this with the intent of making any parent feel bad or guilty about their decision to circumcise a son - what's done is done. I have friends and family that chose circumcision and I do not judge their decision, we all do the best we can with the information we have at the time. I am a very proud mama of three amazing boys - my first son was circumcised but the next two boys were not. I am sharing my story with compassion and hope for all the baby boys not yet born, that maybe by sharing my story, I can save *just one* baby from the unnecessary pain and harm of this procedure. I recognize that this is a very controversial, extremely sensitive, and culturally taboo subject but I have learned that, for most people, the more a person knows about circumcision, the more they are against it and I will always wish that I had been better informed before I had my first baby boy.I was raised Catholic in North Dakota with two sisters and no brothers. I do not remember ever seeing my father naked so I honestly do not know whether he was circumcised or not. I would guess yes because he was born in the 50s when many baby boys were circumcised, often without consent from their parents. The topic of circumcision never came up in my family. To tell you the truth, I naively assumed a circumcised penis was the way boys were born. With that assumption I can't say for certain if any of my sexual partners were circumcised or not because up until I found out I was pregnant with a baby boy I really had no clue about normal male anatomy. In 2004 I was pregnant, and we found out our baby was a BOY! The decision to circumcise or not came up right away. I did all the research and came to the conclusion that I did not want to circumcise our son. I believe at that time I likely found out more than the average U.S. parent discovers. I learned that circumcision is painful, harmful, and medically unnecessary. I learned that no medical organization in the world recommends routine infant circumcision, not even the American Academy of Pediatrics. I learned what the procedure entails and I watched a video and had to mute the sound, no way did I want my baby to go through that. I shared what I had learned with my husband hoping he would agree with me.Unfortunately, he did not. It wasn't even a decision for him, it was going to be done no matter what I said. We argued. I shared the information with him, I showed him the video, but his mind was already made up. It was closed actually. For him, it was a simple procedure that newborn boys went through, much like cutting the umbilical cord. Until then, he had not given much thought to being circumcised as a baby, but felt that he was just fine the way he was, so his son would be too. In the end, I foolishly gave in. I didn't protect my baby even though my maternal instinct screamed to do so. I let my husband choose circumcision for our son because he has a circumcised penis and I don't. However, I had to justify this decision in some way - I couldn't just let it happen knowing what I knew. I didn't care about percentages, I've never really been one to do what everybody else was doing. And at that time the circumcision rate in the U.S. was about 50% - so half were keeping their sons intact, and half weren't. Even though some people claim a circumcised penis "looks better" that didn't make sense to me. How could I possibly think my baby's body was ugly or defective?! I am not a religious person and even though my husband is Jewish we do not practice Judaism so there was no religious reason. So I grabbed onto the one study that claimed circumcised babies have a slightly lower chance of urinary tract infections. My husband has a kidney disease that has a 50% chance of being passed down. Bingo. We circumcised our baby because IF he has this kidney disease, then we should do whatever we can to reduce the chance of a urinary tract infection which could potentially harm the kidneys. That was my reason, my excuse. I insisted that if we were going to circumcise our baby, my husband had to go with him. I did not want him to go through it alone. I was really hoping that this would change his mind, but nope, still just a simple procedure in his eyes. Going with our son actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise later on...Our perfect and healthy little baby boy was born into this world on April 21st. For some reason, the pediatrician we had chosen wasn't called while I was in labor, so she didn't show up at the hospital until the next day as we were checking out. "What about the circumcision?" my husband asked. "Oh, we'll do it in the office next week," she said, "Call and make an appointment." I said I was worried about the procedure and she blew me off saying it's no big deal - that I shouldn't worry about it. She also said she was "pro-circ and thinks it should be done." We scheduled the appointment for April 30th. Even though I wish so many times that during that week I had changed my mind, put my foot down, and protected his tiny perfect body, I didn't. The decision had already been made.So we took him in. My husband went back with him. It seemed to take forever and a nurse came out at one point. She was laughing the whole thing off and mentioned that I looked "terrified." "Yes, I AM terrified!" I thought, "You people are back there forcefully separating, cutting, and removing a part of my baby's body and it is taking for-freakin-ever!" They finally brought him out and the doctor informed me that my baby needed a couple stitches, no big deal. I wanted to throw up. My tiny little baby, his perfectly NORMAL body, had stitches in his penis - the most sacred organ. How could I have let this happen and for what reason?! I really, honestly, don't think I will ever forgive myself for letting this happen to him. I knew better. But it did happen and I couldn't change that and so for weeks afterward at every diaper change I fought back tears and apologized to my baby as I gently pulled back and detached the remaining skin that was obviously trying to heal itself and re-cover the glans that, by nature, is designed to be covered.In 2005 I became pregnant again and we didn't find out the sex this time. The babies would be 16 months apart. At first, my husband was very adamant that if baby #2 was a boy, he would also be circumcised. "They have to match, they have to be the same," he said. I prayed to the universe for a girl, even though I had a good feeling it was another boy. This time though, I was NOT going to give in. Two wrongs do not make a right. Maya Angelou said "When you know better, you do better," and even though I knew in my heart the first time, I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. I wasn't going to let another baby of mine get stitches in his penis for no reason. I also learned more about the foreskin and what is lost when it is removed and how important and valuable this part of the male genitals is during infancy, childhood, and throughout a man's life. So I told my husband that if he really wanted it done, he would need to call the doctor, make the appointment, and take him in to have it done. Knowing his inability to do these sorts of things (ha!), I felt relieved inside. Thankfully, throughout the pregnancy, and as my husband slowly processed his own experience with our first son's circumcision, he was able to see circumcision from a different perspective. I made him tell me what had happened during our son's surgery, even though I didn't want to know. I had to know. We both ended up in tears.I continued to share facts and information, but this time, we didn't argue about it, it was kind of a non-issue because we didn't know if we were having a boy or girl. Believe it or not, what really sealed the deal for him was watching Penn and Teller's (Season 3) Bullshit! episode on circumcision. What really stood out for him was the historical reason Americans started practicing non-religious genital cutting in the first place. If you don't know, you should definitely find out before making this decision, because it really is bullshit. [Hint: Google Kellogg and Graham and their quest to end masturbation.]Our second baby, another boy, was born peacefully and naturally at home in the tub. No appointment was made and he was left whole just as nature intended. I remember asking my husband, "What about circumcision?" He said after having an amazing homebirth, he saw no reason to take our healthy and perfectly normal baby to the doctor to have a part of his body cut off. I will admit, I was a little nervous about taking care of an intact baby because I had zero experience with normal male genitals. But as it turns out, it is MUCH easier than taking care of a circumcised baby. I currently have 10+ years of mothering two intact sons (baby #3 was born in 2007 - another boy!) and ZERO urinary tract infections. One time, son #2 was playing outside naked and got poked in the penis by a really nasty weed in the yard. His foreskin swelled up and it was a little scary but his foreskin did its job and protected the very sensitive glans (head) of the penis. If his foreskin had not been there, the glans most likely would have swelled up and prevented him from peeing normally. Hooray for nature and normal body evolution!So, this is my story. I've experienced both sides of this parenting coin. The heartache and guilt I've felt following my son's circumcision led me to be a voice for baby boys who cannot say NO for themselves. I firmly believe ALL human beings, girls and boys, have a right to their normal, intact genitals. Should an adult man or woman choose circumcision for themselves, as an informed, consenting person - fine by me. But routine infant circumcision is not a compassionate thing to do to a little newborn baby - it hurts, it harms, and there is no good excuse to do it. The foreskin is a very important part of penis! It's his body, it's his penis, and it should be his choice whether or not he wants his full penis - foreskin and all.One thing I have done and I encourage any parents that regret circumcision to do is to Google the doctor that performed their son's circumcision surgery and leave a review for them. There are several websites out there to do this. We need to let these pro-cutting doctors know that we trusted them to provide us with accurate and unbiased information regarding circumcision and that we are not okay with what they've done to our sons.A shocking number of doctors in this country have very little knowledge of normal male anatomy. They do not understand the value and functions of the foreskin, they are only taught to amputate it. Our doctor did not give us accurate information, she was completely biased, and we did not give informed consent as we should have been able to do. Let's make sure our physicians receive feedback, and are encouraged to look into this subject more themselves - for the sake of their future patients.I do not blame the doctor in our case, she only did what she knew. Nor do I blame my husband as he is a victim of circumcision himself. I can only blame myself for not listening to my mama instinct. And I blame our culture for desensitizing us to male genital cutting and allowing it to continue for so long when other English speaking nations abandoned the practice long ago, or never even started cutting babies to begin with.The good news is we are well on our way to becoming a non-cutting country, like the majority of civilized nations around the world. The infant circumcision rate in the U.S. has dropped to under 35% in recent years, and will only go down from here as more parents learn the truth.In the future, I will be honest with my circumcised son about what happened to him and make sure that no future grandsons of mine are cut. My husband and I are proud that we protected our 2nd and 3rd sons' autonomy and genital integrity, and once and for all ended the cycle of genital cutting in our family.

I am a Jew. My husband is not. I am American. My husband is not.
Everything from my experience – my religion, friends, family and country – consider circumcision the norm. In his experience, it is the exact opposite. The proof is in the penis.
Hypothetical. Your mother and her mother and her mother’s mother all had their nipples pierced as babies. Not their ears. Their nipples. Not only that, but every one of your female friends, cousins and colleagues also had it done. You had it done.
You know where I’m going here. Never in a million years, would you take your sweet little girl’s newborn nipple and drive a piece of medal through it. It is ridiculous to consider. Even barbaric.
My husband and I come from different backgrounds. Despite this, we agree; we will not circumcise Baby Ieuan. We both feel circumcision is wrong.
Ieuan should identify with his father. Part of that is recognizing himself in him. When he is toilet trained or changing in the locker room, I want him to feel comfortable. Furthermore, since I would also expect him to shower in that locker room, I’m not really afraid that all kinds of nasty things will develop under his foreskin.
There is no reason to put Ieuan through an unnecessary operation, for cosmetic reasons or social norms. I can’t imagine allowing anyone, no matter what their credentials, to slice off part of my baby boy’s penis. I’ll go a step further and add that my daughter already spends way too much time in the hospital. Why would I send Ieuan there, on purpose, for a procedure that he doesn’t need and will cause him pain?

There's a lot of hype about how circumcision is better for a man's health. But is it really?

Here is Part 2 of our series on myths about circumcision.

Myth: You have to get the baby circumcised because it is really hard to keep a baby's penis clean.

Reality check: In babies, the foreskin is completely fused to the head of the penis. You cannot and should not retract it to clean it, as this would cause the child pain, and is akin to trying to clean the inside of a baby girl's vagina. The infant foreskin is perfectly designed to protect the head of the penis and keep feces out. All you have to do is wipe the outside of the penis like a finger. It is harder to keep circumcised baby's penis clean because you have to carefully clean around the wound, make sure no feces got into the wound, and apply ointment.

Myth: Little boys won't clean under their foreskins and will get infections.

Reality check: The foreskin separates and retracts on its own sometime between age 3 and puberty. Before it retracts on its own, you wipe the outside off like a finger. After it retracts on its own, it will get clean during the boy's shower or bath. Once a boy discovers this cool, new feature of his penis, he will often retract the foreskin himself during his bath or shower, and you can encourage him to rinse it off. But he should not use soap as this upsets the natural balance and is very irritating. There is nothing special that the parents need to do. Most little boys have absolutely no problem playing with their penises in the shower or anywhere else! It was harder to teach my boys to wash their hair than it was to care for their penises. Myth: Uncircumcised penises get smelly smegma.

Reality check: Actually, smegma is produced by the genitals of both women and men during the reproductive years. Smegma is made of sebum and skin cells and lubricates the foreskin and glans in men, and the clitoral hood and inner labia in women. It is rinsed off during normal bathing and does not cause cancer or any other health problems.

Myth: "My uncle wasn't circumcised and he kept getting infections and had to be circumcised as an adult."

Reality check: Medical advice may have promoted infection in uncircumcised males. A shocking number of doctors are uneducated about the normal development of the foreskin, and they (incorrectly) tell parents that they have to retract the baby's foreskin and wash inside it at every diaper change. Doing this tears the foreskin and the tissue (called synechia) that connects it to the head of the penis, leading to scarring and infection.

Misinformation was especially prevalent during the 1950s and 60s, when most babies were circumcised and we didn't know as much about the care of the intact penis, which is why the story is always about someone's uncle. Doing this to a baby boy would be like trying to clean the inside of a baby girl's vagina with Q-tips at every diaper change. Rather than preventing problems, such practices would cause problems by introducing harmful bacteria. Remember that humans evolved from animals, so no body part that required special care would survive evolutionary pressures. The human genitals are wonderfully self-cleaning and require no special care.

Myth: My son was diagnosed with phimosis and so had to be circumcised.

Reality check: Phimosis means that the foreskin will not retract. Since children's foreskins are naturally not retractable, it is impossible to diagnose phimosis in a child. Any such diagnoses in infants are based on misinformation, and are often made in order to secure insurance coverage of circumcision in states in which routine infant circumcision is no longer covered.

Even some adult men have foreskins that do not retract, but as long as it doesn't interfere with sexual intercourse, it is no problem at all, as urination itself cleans the inside of the foreskin (note that urine is sterile when leaving the body.)

Phimosis can also be treated conservatively with a steroid cream and gentle stretching done by the man himself, should he so desire it, or, at worst, a slit on the foreskin, rather than total circumcision. (Ashfield 2003) These treatment decisions can and should be made by the adult man.

Myth: Uncircumcised boys get more urinary tract infections (UTIs.)

Reality check: This claim is based on one study that looked at charts of babies born in one hospital (Wiswell 1985). The study had many problems, including that it didn't accurately count whether or not the babies were circumcised, whether they were premature and thus more susceptible to infection in general, whether they were breastfed (breastfeeding protects against UTI), and if their foreskins had been forcibly retracted (which can introduce harmful bacteria and cause UTI) (Pisacane 1990). There have been many studies since which show either no decrease in UTI with circumcision, or else an increase in UTI from circumcision. Thus circumcision is not recommended to prevent UTI (Thompson 1990). Girls have higher rates of UTI than boys, and yet when a girl gets a UTI, she is simply prescribed antibiotics. The same treatment works for boys.

Myth: Circumcision prevents HIV/AIDS.

Reality check: Three studies in Africa several years ago that claimed that circumcision prevented AIDS and that circumcision was as effective as a 60% effective vaccine (Auvert 2005, 2006). These studies had many flaws, including that they were stopped before all the results came in. There have also been several studies that show that circumcision does not prevent HIV (Connolly 2008). There are many issues at play in the spread of STDs which make it very hard to generalize results from one population to another.

In Africa, where the recent studies have been done, most HIV transmission is through male-female sex, but in the USA, it is mainly transmitted through blood exposure (like needle sharing) and male-male sex. Male circumcision does not protect women from acquiring HIV, nor does it protect men who have sex with men (Wawer 2009, Jameson 2009).

What's worse, because of the publicity surrounding the African studies, men in Africa are now starting to believe that if they are circumcised, they do not need to wear condoms, which will increase the spread of HIV (Westercamp 2010). Even in the study with the most favorable effects of circumcision, the protective effect was only 60% - men would still have to wear condoms to protect themselves and their partners from HIV.

In the USA, during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 90s, about 85% of adult men were circumcised (much higher rates of circumcision than in Africa), and yet HIV still spread.

It is important to understand, too, that the men in the African studies were adults and they volunteered for circumcision. Babies undergoing circumcision were not given the choice to decide for themselves.

Myth: Circumcision is worth it because it can save lives.

Reality check: Consider breast cancer: There is a 12% chance that a woman will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Removal of the breast buds at birth would prevent this, and yet no one would advocate doing this to a baby. It is still considered somewhat shocking when an adult woman chooses to have a prophylactic mastectomy because she has the breast cancer gene, yet this was a personal choice done based upon a higher risk of cancer. The lifetime risk of acquiring HIV is less than 2% for men, and can be lowered to near 0% through condom-wearing (Hall 2008). How, then, can we advocate prophylactic circumcision for baby boys?

Science and data do not support the practice of infant circumcision. Circumcision does not preclude the use of the condom. The adult male should have the right to make the decision for himself and not have his body permanently damaged as a baby.

Protect Your Son

My partner and I decided a long time ago, long before we had children, that if we had a boy, we would not circumcise him. For me, it was partly a reaction to seeing it done while I was in nursing school- it is a somewhat traumatic recollection of a newborn being strapped down and screaming bloody murder while his foreskin was cut off with no anesthesia. It made a very big impression on me. I was then somewhat inflexible about the procedure, ie- there was no way in hell I’d ever put my kid through that. There was no rational reason as to why it was a good idea. Thankfully my partner agreed/agrees and it was settled at that.

I’m somewhat shocked (and even appalled) that this continues to be a practice that is acceptable in this day and age. Some of the arguments for? Its cleaner (what about soap and water?), daddy is circumcised (really, that much of a threat if they look different?), everyone else is circumcised- I don’t want my son to be different (its all in how you talk to your son about his body and how he understands differences), etc, I could go on.

In some of the research I did, I found that the numbers of circumcision are dropping, now less than 50% of all boys are circumcised. In the Los Angeles area the figure closer to 25-30%. That made me happy to hear.

Interestingly, both of my parents felt this was an important enough issue to render an opinion about. I received separate emails from both of them stating their opposition to us not circumcising. My mother’s main argument was that only “porn stars” are not circumcised. My father’s main argument was that they will be different than other kids and this will cause them distress. I was not swayed, not in the least. I’m not sure why there is this outside pressure to circumcise- generational?

A friend of ours sent us an article from Mothering magazine- where Paul Fleiss debunks every argument about why your son needs to be circumcised. Its a good read for yourself or for anyone who is after you to do something you don’t want to do. Read it.

Before having my first son, we were presented with the decision (at least in the United States) of whether or not to circumcise him. While we were initially assuming we would, we did some research. We began finding that not only is male infant circumcision almost never medically necessary, but it's not even performed in most of the developed world. The majority of European countries never began circumcising in the first place. The United Kingdom doesn't pay for it; it's an out-of-pocket expense. The United States is the only secular country that routinely circumcises males.

I can personally attest to this now, because I worked for six years as a certified nurse aide prior to becoming an RN. I worked with countless intact men, mostly European immigrants in Chicago: Poles, Serbs, Lithuanians, etc. Younger men and older men. Men who could walk to the bathroom, and men who constantly soiled themselves. Men who had indwelling Foley catheters and men who didn't. Men who were impeccably clean, and men who were homeless. Men who were healthy, and men who were critically ill and severely immunocompromised.

Never once did I encounter an adult male patient who had ever had a medical problem due to being intact.

Not only that, but during the cleaning of patients, I only ever worked with two nurses (that I remember) who would actually go through the rigmarole of retracting the foreskin, cleaning the glans, and replacing the foreskin. That's what we were taught in CNA and nursing school, but almost everyone would leave it alone. I suspect most people who work with a high intact population do the same. If it never presents a problem, it's always clean, and you're just causing discomfort, why do it?

In fact, female patients are far more prone to fungal and bacterial genitourinary infections than male patients are—yeast infections, urinary tract infections, abscesses, etc. And we know that this is largely due not only to their shorter urethra, but also to their labial folds—their "excess" skin. Why don't we cut that off? Why isn't female circumcision considered for infection prophylaxis? That's how we think of male circumcision. Except the reality is that, as with male patients, the 'benefit' of circumcision would be negligible, because the number of serious complications with women staying 'uncircumcised' is extremely minor.

So as it stands, we have two sons who are intact. One is almost five years old and the other is nearly three. They've never had a problem. During diapering they required less care and bother than our daughters did. And now, during bathing, we don't retract or mess with their prepuce (foreskin).

They're clean.

They're fine.

I suspect that someday they'll be like my patients were: ninety years old and intact—with no regrets.

BOSTON (RNS) The ballot question in San Francisco to ban infant circumcision has stimulated a wave of discussion about religious liberty and parental choice, but the more general question of the advisability of circumcision is mostly avoided.

It's time to start talking, however uncomfortable that might be.

I started thinking about this question more than 25 years ago when I attended my first bris, or ritual circumcision ceremony. As someone who is very sensitive to the pain experienced by children, I was reluctant to go. The event is indelibly impressed on my mind.

When the circumcision began, the infant screamed, and I can't imagine an infant crying any louder or with more agony, pain, and sense of urgency in his voice. A few people were crying quietly, including his parents.

Using every bit of energy he had, the infant protested vehemently what was being done to him with the best of adult intentions. I resolved to do something about what I had witnessed.

My subsequent years of reflection, study, conversations and experience with this issue have convinced me that there are extremely
important aspects of circumcision that are unrecognized or not talked about. Small group meetings with circumcised men, clinical experience, and independent surveys have contributed to a greater understanding of the deep feelings some people have about circumcision -- even if they, too, had trouble talking about it.

In 1995, I founded the Jewish Circumcision Resource Center, which represents Jews around the world who question ritual circumcision. We want Jews to know that if you question circumcision, you are not alone.

Jews have contributed books, films, research, and other work to bring attention to the harm of circumcision. Consequently, numerous articles in Jewish periodicals have debated circumcision, and the practice is no longer universal among Jews in the United States, South America, Europe, and Israel.

Jews have organized groups to oppose circumcision here and in Israel, and a growing number of Jews recognize that they actually have a choice about circumcision, such as opting for a welcoming ceremony without circumcision for baby boys.

While questioning circumcision may make some Jews uncomfortable, the continuing intellectual, emotional, and ethical conflicts about circumcision also make us uncomfortable. And it's time to talk about it.

Some mothers have revealed great distress about permitting and watching the circumcision of their sons and have regretted their
decision for years. "I will go to my grave hearing that horrible wail," one mother told me.

Recent information supports their feelings. Studies show that infants experience significant pain and trauma during circumcision,
which can result in behavioral and neurological changes in infants. The behavioral changes can disrupt mother-child bonding, and circumcision carries some two dozen surgical risks including (in rare cases) death.

Some dissatisfied circumcised men report wide-ranging physical, sexual, and psychological consequences, partly because they are aware that the foreskin has significant physiological and sexual functions. Circumcised men have reported decreased sexual sensitivity and even erectile dysfunction.

Psychological effects can include anger, sense of loss, sadness, sexual anxieties, reduced emotional expression, and avoidance of
intimacy. Such adverse effects of circumcision on men and infants are changing how some Jews feel about circumcision.

When Jewish-American parents choose circumcision, many procedures are done in hospitals without any religious ritual. Without a strong religious belief, many Jews circumcise because of cultural conformity and belief in medical or religious myths.

Yet consider these facts. Jewish circumcision has never had anything to do with health concerns, and neither is circumcision a requirement of Jewish identity. No national medical organization in the world recommends routine circumcision of male infants. No experimental anesthetic has been found to be safe and effective in preventing circumcision pain in infants.

It's our responsibility as Jews to welcome new information and thoughtful inquiry on this or any other question. Because of the growing evidence of the harmful effects of circumcision, more Jews are trusting their feelings -- applying ethics, reason, and experience, and resolving their conflicts with a decision not to circumcise.

Perpetuating the pain of circumcision is far greater than the pain that comes with confronting the issues we and others have raised. Based on our contacts with hundreds of Jews who do not circumcise, there is growing support for this view.

We recognize the difficulty of questioning circumcision, but the traumatic cries or silent shock of circumcised Jewish infants have been ignored far too long.

Human Foreskins are Big Business for Cosmetics

In the business of vanity almost anything goes. Creams, lotions, and cosmetics are reported to be made out many things that most people would be repulsed by. Fish scales in lipsticks, cow placenta in anti-aging products, crushed female cochineal insects in shampoo, and human foreskin in face cream.

Foreskin fibroblasts are used to grow and cultivate new cells that are then used for a variety of purposes. From the fibroblasts new skin for burn victims can be grown, skin to cover diabetic ulcers, and controversially it is also used to make cosmetic creams and collagens. One foreskin can be used for decades to grow $100,000 worth of fibroblasts.

Debate is growing over the ethics of using human foreskins for cosmetic purposes. One such cosmetic company, SkinMedica is raising a stir over their use of the growth hormone left over from growing artificial skin from foreskin fibroblasts. Dr. Fitzpatrick, who invented SkinMedica, works with a supplier that uses foreskin fibroblast to make injectable collagen. The foreskins that he receives the growth hormone for are used especially for cosmetics rather than for growing new skin for medical patients.

SkinMedica, which sells for over $100 for a 63-oz. bottle, was made famous by Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters. Winfrey in fact has promoted SkinMedica several times on her show and website. Discussions about the ethics of using human foreskins for vanity have been circulating on the web but there has not been a response from Winfrey on this debate.

Dr. Fitzpatrick says that using foreskins was simply a choice of convenience. "It doesn't matter if you get a fibroblast from the eyelid, the cheek, the foot or the foreskin," Fitzgerald said in an interview. "That cell is still a fibroblast; it does the same thing. Foreskins were used because that is a common surgery and the skin is thrown away, so why not use it for benefits? Twelve years ago when this was done, there would have been no objection to using foreskin tissue." But now that circumcision rates in Canada have dropped below 10 percent and rates in the United States are dropping foreskins are not as convenient anymore. Newborn foreskins are extremely valuable for fibroblasts. The tissue reproduces better, has more vitality, and is generally guaranteed to be healthy.

SkinMedica is not the only company profiting from human foreskins. Since the 1980's many hospitals have been providing infant foreskins to a number of bio-research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and of course cosmetic companies. In Mothering Magazine in the Winter of 1997 issue Paul M. Fleiss, MD stated that "the marketing of purloined baby foreskins is a multimillion-dollar-a-year industry." With inflation and the growing number of cosmetic companies using foreskin fibroblasts that number is surely even higher today.

Penis Balloons! They are the occasional delight of growing up as an intact boy.

I always have to giggle when I hear stories about pediatricians who ignorantly warn parents that their son’s ballooning penis is now prone to infection or other complications and must be treated promptly. This makes me laugh primarily because my own son, who is now three, delights in this normal developmental process every single day, and has done so since he was around ten months of age. In fact, I'd venture to say that most intact boys will enjoy the fun of making penis balloons at some point or another during their childhood, whether his parents realize it or not. Honestly, though, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry because these types of statements from medical doctors are not only ridiculously false, but they speak to a serious delinquency in the basic understanding of the intact penis. This is a topic I revisit time and time again with parents and it seems that, despite all the information now available, parents are still being fear-mongered into unnecessary, harmful treatments and/or prepuce amputations on the grounds of one of the most normal, natural phases of the development of the intact child: ballooning.

What is Ballooning?

Ballooning occurs when the foreskin begins to separate or has separated from the glans (head) of the penis but the foreskin opening remains narrow. As a boy urinates the urine will fill the empty space between the foreskin and glans, and create a ballooning effect. As the urine escapes through the narrow opening the balloon will slowly decrease in size (deflate) and the foreskin will return to its normal state.

A two-year-old boy died on the operating table after circumcision. The devastated parents of Jamaal Coleson Jr, from Queens, are demanding to know why their son died during the procedure at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan.

Jamaal's uncle Jabbar Coleson, 23, said his nephew died on Tuesday about ten hours after he went in to be circumcised. His grieving parents - Taleah Echezerriam and Jamaal Coleson - were too distraught to speak.

Coleson told the New York Post that the hospital was supposed to give the two-year-old a local analgesic, but instead gave him a general one. Jamaal, who would have celebrated his second birthday next month, was said to have "woken up and called for his mother, and then went critical."

Jamaal never regained consciousness and was declared dead at 8.35pm.

Coleson, who lives in Atlanta, told the Post, "I want to know what happened. He was so sweet and energetic and so happy - a very happy child. I am very upset and I am glad I am a couple of hundred miles away. I have time to calm down and say my prayers."

The family are demanding answers and want to know what went wrong. The hospital said in a statement:
We extend heartfelt condolences to the family of the young patient in question. This is a devastating event for his family as well as for the staff at Beth Israel who tried to save his life. We immediately notified the Medical Examiner's Office and requested that they accept this case for further review, which they have. Student’s fight against circumcision reaches global stage : The Rebel Yell

UNLV student Travis Wisdom has been battling the centuries-old Western tradition of male circumcision for two years. And he’s backing it up with research.
A women’s studies major in his senior year, Wisdom is passionate about sharing his views and research on the preservation of the genital integrity of infants and is seeking to educate people about what he said is the danger of the practice of circumcision.
Wisdom was invited to travel to Lisbon, Portugal to share the knowledge of the history of circumcision that he has gained after two years of research. He will travel to Canada soon after he returns to speak on the medical aspects of circumcision.
In September, he will travel to the United Kingdom to speak about genital autonomy in a conference and assist those who have been circumcised and regret it.
“When he comes home, he will have more to say, more to offer, more experience and more education,” said Marilyn Milos, director of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers, which has worked with Wisdom and identified with the cause of eradicating infant circumcision.
“Everything he does, he does with dignity and respect,” she said of Wisdom. “He is responsible and conscious.”
Wisdom was inspired to start his research after he watched part of a video that depicted a circumcision and engaged in a class discussion on the issue.
“I made the decision that I needed to do research to understand how can someone do that to a child as a doctor,” Wisdom said. “How they can hear the screams of a child and think nothing of it?”
Wisdom interned with Doctors Against Circumcision for one year, after which he contacted Milos.
In Nevada, circumcision rates are the lowest in the country — 20 percent. Wisdom helped to establish a second NOCIRC chapter in the state, which is the only chapter in Las Vegas.
“I love what he is doing,” Milos said. “The fact that he is a young man who understands this issue is remarkable … He is coming forward in this movement and doing some wonderful things.”
Wisdom’s research has focused on the medical aspect of circumcision. He said that nowadays, most doctors don’t know the exact medical reason as to why circumcision is practiced.
“The United States is the only country in the world to [perform circumcision on most of the male populations] for secular reasons,” Wisdom said.
He explained that the practice of circumcision runs deep in American culture and has become established as an acceptable medical operation, starting in the West as a way to prevent children from masturbating because doctors believed that masturbation was the reason for many diseases.
“In the beginning, circumcision was said to prevent diseases from head to toe, then hygiene started to be implemented [as a reason],” he said.
However, Wisdom said that there is no necessity to circumcise a child for hygienic purposes.
“Teach a child how to clean his penis and there will be no problem,” he said. “Not only is circumcision utterly ridiculous. It’s extremely barbaric.”
Wisdom also explained that most physicians perform circumcision on the basis of preventing penile cancer without telling parents of babies that penile cancer is even less common than male breast cancer.
“I always get nervous when a doctor alleges the necessity of circumcision,” Wisdom said.
He also said that circumcision can cause neurogenic shock on infants because it is a procedure usually performed without anesthesia. In most cases, babies are too young to undergo anesthesia.
Wisdom said he believes circumcision is a human rights violation and should not be performed on children, regardless of religion.
“It is not a minor surgery and it’s not something that doesn’t cause trauma to the body,” Wisdom said. “Circumcision is an act of violence and a misappropriation of power.”
Wisdom is affiliated with religious organizations that are against circumcision. He believes that, in some ways, circumcision can be a way for religions to maintain dominance and control.
“Your religious right ends with the rights of someone else’s body,” Wisdom said. “[Nothing] gives you the right to harm someone else’s body in the name of religion.”
Milos commended Wisdom for his commitment to the issue of male circumcision and said that she is eager for him to continue his advocacy both nationally and internationally, though she said that changing people’s minds about such a long-standing practice will not be an easy task.
“When you challenge the dominant paradigm and the status quo,” Milos said, “you make a lot of people angry with you.”

and to say no is just simply something many are not strong enough to do,

And for those who are not educated, surely you must know that they are cutting precious babies

When I was an intern, just starting my OB/GYN residency, someone handed me a list with a dozen names on it and said, “Go. It’s your job to circumcise these babies.” My mouth flung open. Say what?

Do you know what you just made me do to your son?
Sure enough, as it turns out, it’s the intern’s responsibility to wake up sleeping newborns, strap them down to a board that looks not unlike the electric chair (called a “circumstraint”), clamp their unanesthetized foreskins with the sterilized Gomco or Mogen instrument, and cut away the foreskins from the tips of the poor baby penises while they scream bloody murder, turn beet red, and pee in your face. I hated it. It was just awful.

The nurses would line them up, one after the other -- then, after wrapping their little post-operative pee-pees in Vaseline gauze, I would deliver them back to their Mommies. The whole time, I wanted to say, “Do you know what you just made me do to your son?”

Before doing the procedure, I always had the Mommy sign a consent form that basically says that this procedure is completely unnecessary, that it’s purely cosmetic, and that the baby might bleed, get infected, or have its penis accidentally lopped off. And they would sign away on the dotted line without blinking. It baffled me.

All in the family
During my residency, I performed at least a thousand circumcisions, many of which left me blubbering like a child because it just broke my heart to have to hurt these poor babies. When I complained about having to do them to my physician father, he said, “I’m so glad nobody ever did that to me.”

Until he said it, I had never thought about whether my father was circumcised. My family grew up pretty open about bodies and sexuality, so yes, I had seen my father naked. But I guess I’d never really scrutinized his genitalia. Then it occurred to me. I had also seen my brother naked -- and he was circumcised. If Dad was happy to be uncut, why did he choose to circumcise his son?

When I asked him, Dad said that he didn’t want Chris to feel different, and at the time, everybody was circumcising their boys.

I thought back to the Somali women I had cared for, all of which had been victims of female genital mutilation. My job as their doctor was not only to care for them but to help educate them in order to prevent them from putting their daughters through the same disfiguring surgery. When I asked them why they would want to do something so traumatic to their daughter’s genitalia, they all said, “We don’t want her to look different than the other girls.”

So we don't feel... different?
Listen to us! Why are we cutting our children so that they don’t feel different? I just don’t understand. Why did my parents feel the need to cut my brother when his own father wasn’t even circumcised? What is wrong with our bodies the way they’re born? Why do we feel the need to mutilate our bodies in the name of religion, cosmetics, or societal acceptance?

Contrary to some reports, there’s no proven medical reason to circumcise a boy (or a girl, for that matter). Pediatricians agree that, as long as a child is taught to clean under the foreskin, penises are perfectly healthy and beautiful just the way they’re made, and there’s no health benefit to surgically altering the penis.

So why do we do it? I understand that there’s a long cultural history in Judaism around circumcision, so I can cut them some slack (although there’s also a long history around cutting a woman’s genitals in Africa -- does that make it right?). As for the rest of us, why are we even doing this? Do we think God made a mistake by creating penises with foreskins? And if we’re doing it for purely cosmetic reasons, don’t you think we should allow the child to make his own decision when he’s old enough to choose? What message are we giving our newborns? Why are we whisking them off hours after birth to have surgery -- usually with no anesthesia? What kind of welcome to the world is that?

Loving yourself exactly the way you are
If you’re a parent who chose to circumcise her sons, I’m not trying to make you feel bad. What’s done is done. You made the best decision you could at the time, with the guidance of those who were helping you make this decision, and I fully support you for doing what you thought was right. But if you don’t have kids yet or are pregnant and have to make a choice soon, please consider allowing your boys to keep the bodies they were born with.

Owning Pink is all about encouraging you to be authentic, to love yourself exactly the way you are, to appreciate and honor your bodies -- imperfections included -- and to live life with loads of mojo. Why not raise our boys to Own Pink as well? So what if your son looks different in the locker room. Encourage him to embrace his difference, to celebrate his wholeness, to honor diversity. And if he decides later on that he wants to undergo an elective, cosmetic surgery, support him in his autonomous decision but remind him that he’s beautiful and perfect just the way he is.

7 Reasons Not to Circumcise Your Baby
There’s absolutely no medical reason to do so. Contrary to popular belief, circumcision does not make the penis cleaner -- it just crosses off one more area that needs attention in the shower. It doesn’t reduce the risk of STDs, bladder infections, penile cancer, or penis infections.
The surgery carries risks -- and yes, while I have never been personally responsible for pulling a Lorena Bobbitt on a poor, defenseless baby, I have seen little boys get the ends of their penises cut off as the result of circumcision. And remember, if you give birth at a hospital that has residents, it’s often the intern performing the circumcision!
Many swear that having foreskin helps prevent premature ejaculation and can lead to longer lovemaking.
God doesn’t make mistakes -- and the body was made with foreskin.
Most countries do not circumcise their boys. Why should we?
A person should have the right to choose whether they undergo a purely cosmetic surgery that cannot be undone.
Circumcision HURTS! While some swear that babies cannot feel, I have watched them when I cut their little foreskins. And they definitely feel pain. Maybe they don’t remember it, but somewhere in their little budding psyches, they might. Do we really want a child’s first experience in life to be this pain?
My colleague, best-selling author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom Dr. Christiane Northrup (who also wrote the foreward to my book!), agrees with me. We need to stop circumcision. We just do. It has to start somewhere. Please spread the word.

As soon as I found out I was having a boy I started researching circumcision. I did not like what I saw. So much pain for such a little person to deal with for what I found to be no apparent reason. I had totally made up my mind and I was completely against such a barbaric elective surgery.

But as soon as people find out you're having a boy it starts... the questioning. "Your gonna get him cut right?" "Are you circumcising?" "Who's doing his circumcision?" I always answered with, "I won't be getting him circumcised." Then came the "Ohhhh..." with an eyeroll. I let it go...

His father was all for circumcision, but I put up such a huge fight that he finally just let me have my way. My dad wanted him to be circumcised as well, but I just ignored him the best I could. At the time of Lantz's birth there was quite a lot going on in my life. My grandmother was dying of brain cancer and she passed five days after Lantz was born. I was extremely close to her - she was like a second mother to me. She was home on hospice in the end, and we took care of her 24/7. So I was beyond stressed at this time.

It was at this point in Lantz's young life that someone said something to me that would ultimately cause me to circumcise my baby. Their words hurt so bad, that it made me do it. I don't want to discuss specifically what was said, or who said it, but just know that it still hurts me today.

After my Grandmother passed, we had to travel for her funeral, and while we were out of town I decided I couldn't risk my son hating me in the long run, so I planned to have him circumcised when I got home. I called and made the appointment, and my aunt and I took him to be circumcised.

We arrived around 11am and waited for a few minutes until the nurse called us back. She took Lantz from me and told me to go back to the waiting room - she would be back in about twenty minutes. So we sat down and waited. Only minutes later she came out again and called us back. There were two big double doors to get to the back of the office where the rooms for circumcision surgery were. As soon as she opened one of the doors I could hear Lantz screaming. I was in shock.

She led us into the room and I almost hit the floor. There lied my beautiful, perfect baby strapped to a board screaming so very hard he was purple and couldn't catch his breath. His hands were so tight his knuckles were white. I rubbed the only place I could, his forehead. I stroked it and told him I loved him and that he would be okay. The nurse just kept saying over and over again, "He's going be fine." She made me feel like what I was doing was wrong - as though I shouldn't be attempting to console my baby.

The doctor was in the room but he didn't say anything to me - he just left the room. The nurse then told me that she couldn't get the bleeding to stop. She asked my aunt to hold pressure while she left the room to get a Styrofoam band to wrap around his penis to try and stop the bleeding. After she applied the band she put his diaper back on and once again told us he was fine, and that we could leave to go home, so we did.

We drove the forty-five minute drive back to our house. When we arrived into town I stopped by my mom's office where she worked as a nurse to tell her about what had just happened. She told us to go on home and she followed to take a look at Lantz. When she took his diaper off, it was completely and totally full of blood. She looked at me and said, "We're going back now."

I called to let them know we were on our way, and off we went back to the doctors office. They took us back where they held pressure for what seemed like forever! A doctor came in and looked at Lantz and left the room without saying anything to us. Another doctor came in and did the same. Finally, the first doctor came back and told me they nicked a vein and she was getting a surgeon to come over and cauterize the vein. So there we sat with my bleeding, screaming baby and waited for the surgeon who never came.

After waiting for a very long time my mom went into the hall to ask someone where the surgeon was. They sent us across the street directly to another surgeon’s office. He called us back, took off Lantz's diaper and said, "Oh no - they've cut all the skin off." He sent us to the emergency department at the hospital where they performed an emergency surgery to stitch the top of Lantz's penis to the baby fat around the base to stop the bleeding. The doctor had cut all the skin off the shaft of Lantz’s penis. He bled for eight hours.

When Lantz was eighteen months old he had his second corrective surgery. We waited in a room with Lantz, where they had us dress him in a tiny hospital gown and gave him toys to play with while we waited. And then they came to get us. My mom and I walked Lantz down a long white hallway following the doctor. We came to a set of big swinging doors and the doctor turned to us and said this is our stop. So I kissed Lantz, told him I loved him, and handed him over to a complete stranger. I turned around and walked away, holding onto my mom all the way back down the hallway, sobbing. We waited in a huge waiting room with lots of other people waiting for family who were in surgery also. It seemed like years, and then finally they called for "the mother of Lantz." As soon as I saw him, I just wanted to hold on to him forever and never let him go. There he was - drugged and limp, in his tiny hospital gown. They put him in my arms and wheeled us to recovery. He was pitiful. But I thought to myself, "It is over! Thank God! We did it! He's fixed!"

When Lantz was two years old we had another appointment with his pediatric urologist who informed us he would indeed need yet another corrective surgery. One week later, there we were in the same boat we had already been in. Only difference this time was that when they came out post-op to call for "the mother of Lantz," I went back to my uncontrollable, screaming son. I could do nothing to help him. He just cried, "Owie, owie..." It was horrible. The next few weeks were even worse. Every time he walked he cried owie. His penis was so swollen I thought it was going to pop. Then the night terrors started. He would start screaming with his eyes still closed, and I could not wake him up, and could not do anything to calm him. He just screamed and screamed for months, every single night.

After this, we were finally told there would "most likely" be no more surgery! Lantz will have problems in his future because of the circumcision, but there is no way to know just how bad they will be, and there is nothing we can do to fix them. The guilt I feel hurts so bad. Why wasn't I strong enough to stand up for my baby? How am I going to explain this to him when he's older? Nothing in my life has ever hurt this bad. I scarred my baby - my sweet, perfect baby.

This little one is not screaming. He is not sleeping. But he has gone into shock: a semi-comatose state that the human body slips into in order to physically survive extreme pain and trauma.

After the cutting of his genitals is complete, this little baby may sleep for many hours a day over the next several days or weeks (much more than is normal or healthy for a newborn, and similar to the deep depressive-state sleep that adults often slip into after trauma). He may experience severe 'colic' for weeks and months to come, as his body attempts to heal itself and deal with the very real pain and suffering of both a festering amputation wound, and post-traumatic stress. His cortisol levels (stress hormones) remain high. His metabolic brain functioning has changed. He may have trouble nursing or gaining weight, and he has a significantly greater risk of being deemed a 'failure to thrive' case. He will likely experience pain to a heightened degree in the future, even into adulthood. And his normal sexual functioning is forever impacted as a result of this alteration in form.

There are many side effects to the genital cutting of a human baby. Today, 68% of U.S. parents, 91% of Canadian parents, and the majority of the rest of the world keep their sons intact from birth. Please, be fully informed for the sake of your child.

Why Does Circumcision Persist in the 21st Century in America?

Parents have been misinformed by the medical community about circumcision, and they now are repeating the mistakes of the past, ingrained by familiarity and tradition.

Typical excuses are:

“So my son will look like his father.” (In reality fathers and sons don’t compare genitals.)
“So my son will look like the other boys.” (With circumcision rates falling below 60%, that reason becomes less valid every year.)
“I don’t want my son to have to be circumcised later in life for a medical reason. I’d rather him get it over now. “ (Only 1 in 10,000 intact men ever need to be circumcised later in life for legitimate medical reasons.)
Profiteering

Hospitals and doctors profit by performing circumcisions. Circumcision is the most commonly performed elective surgery in America. Since they earn income from the procedure, the medical community tends to be biased in favor of circumcision. In an era of reduced insurance payments to hospitals, there is more pressure than ever to increase revenues.

Doctors get paid extra fees, and hospitals also get paid a facility fee for each circumcision. The average amount invoiced to insurance carriers is on average $1500 per circumcision. Also, circumcised infants typically have longer hospital stays which increases revenue. Also, under the law, hospitals automatically retain ownership of harvested infant foreskin tissue. Neonatal tissue has unique stem cells and growth factors which are valuable. Hospitals can then sell infant foreskin tissue to bio-tech and cosmetic companies for further profit.

False Medical Claims.

Throughout the ages, advocates of circumcision have attempted to find diseases to be cured with circumcision to justify the procedure.

Keep in mind, no professional medical association in the world recommends routine infant circumcision, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

At the turn of the century, in the Victorian age, it was purported to cure insanity and reduce masturbation.

In the Post war era, it was touted it as a new modern wonder, for hygiene, convenience, and good health.

Some attempt to claim that circumcision prevents rare forms of penile cancer, and also attempt to confuse the issue with the more common prostate cancer. However even the American Cancer Society states that circumcision is not a sole means of preventing penile cancer, but that smoking is the highest risk factor. In developed countries, intact and circumcised men have no difference in penile cancer rates.

Advocates of circumcision attempt to link the foreskin to the spread of the HPV (Genital warts) Papilloma virus. However, no studies have proven that circumcision is an effective prophylactic of preventing HPV. There is a very effective HPV vaccine available for men and women with a 99%+ efficacy rate that renders this argument moot.

Circumcision and HIV prevention.

Circumcision does not prevent transmission of the HIV. Advocates of circumcision have touted flawed studies in third world African counties that seemed to show limited protection against HIV infection. However, most men of sexually active age in the United States are already circumcised, but the HIV infection rates are higher in the USA than in other developed countries where circumcision is rare. Recently, a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) proved what we knew all along, that circumcised men have the same HIV infection rate as intact men in the USA.
Religion

Circumcision is mandated in the Muslim and Jewish faiths. The intent of such ancient religious edicts may have been to help keep a man’s mind focused on his religion, morals and piety, facilitated by the removal of sensitive erogenous tissue.

Maimonides, the preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher and physician, said that the effect of circumcision was "to limit sexual intercourse, and to weaken the organ of generation as far as possible, and thus cause man to be moderate...for there is no doubt that circumcision weakens the power of sexual excitement, and sometimes lessens the natural enjoyment; the organ necessarily becomes desensitized when deprived of its covering from the beginning.

hi i don't usually wright in my own blog but i thought i would just tell a bit about me

first i am 44 years old and am intact my father was intact my brother is intact my nephew is intact and my 8 year old son is intact as for everyone else that i know in my family they are circumcised

For as long as i can remember i have been opposed to circumcision
the very first thing i ever search for on the internet was circumcision
and ever since have made it my mission to promote the foreskin and oppose circumcision of anyone under 18

that is a bit about me if anyone would like to know more or ask me a question just email me

i would also like to include some simple info on the foreskin for parent with any intact son

first of don't retract you sons foreskin or let anyone else

second after he is potty trained when he is in the bath you can teach him to retract and rinse under the foreskin (note the foreskin may not retract or only retract partly that is fine just show him it will retract )

third don't let him grow up not knowing that the foreskin retracts as i have read on yahoo answers

forth when he is young only let him retract in a warm bath that softens the skin to make it easier
